“My favorite part of being on the MHS speech and debate team was really just finding my voice. I felt I could really grow in learning how to research, discuss, and debate in a non judgmental environment that also pushed me. I met so many people within MHS speech and debate and at the many schools we competed against – some of them are still friends over a decade later. I even met who would end up being my freshman year college roommate from speech and debate!”

“Without debate, I can’t say I would be going to a top school on an almost full ride. I don’t believe I would be nearly as confident of a speaker as I am now without it. The lessons I earned from losing and winning are invaluable, and I couldn’t trade them for anything. The team is a small family that gives everyone a sense of belonging.”

Even now I reflect back with my lifetime friend Riley on coming back to debate because of how much I enjoyed it all. As I began participating in the activity, I found people who shared the same hobbies and interests as me and we formed a close knit family.
